How to Order your SeaDog Sail

 Deciding on the Sail size

When deciding on the size of the sail, there are a few points to consider.

The standard sail which is bought by around 95% of my customers is the Commander 0.8m.  This is the twin batten sail with reefing eyelets and sewn in boom.

This sail has a mast length of 146cm and will fit most boats.  The mast base is mounted approximately 136cm forward from the FRONT edge of the cockpit coaming and the sail overlaps the cockpit by 10cm

The other option is the Commander 1m2 loose foot, which has a mast length of 166cm and will overlap the cockpit by 30cm. This sail is NOT suitable for boats under 5.3m. The overlap is along the centre of the boat. When stowed the mast lies to one side of the cockpit and the overlap isn’t too much of a problem.

However, many paddlers might not be happy with this amount of overlap as it can impede entry and exit into the kayak to some degree. This sail is more suited to an experienced kayaker who has had kayak sails in the past and is used to kayak sailing.

The other point to consider is that the 1m2 has a loose foot which can at times get tangled up with other deck lines etc.

Up to 10knots of windspeed there isn’t much difference between the 2 sails, but as the wind increases in the 10-15knot range, the larger sail is at an advantage.

As an all-round sail which works well in most conditions, I would definitely recommend the Commander 0.8m.  It’s a simpler sail to use with no adjustments to the foot, and with the reefing eyelets, can be used up to the 20knot range.

Choosing the sail Colours

The sail is made up of 4 panels.  Colours of the top 3 panels can be selected from the colour chart below.  The bottom panel  No. 4 is Translucent sail cloth on every sail, chosen for its good folding characteristics and cannot be changed.  This material is translucent when viewed close up but cannot be seen through when sailing.  Forward vision is by looking underneath the sail, with the sail mounted high enough to enable this.

Trim colours can only be Black or Red.  Mast luff pockets are matched to the predominant colour of the sail.  Batten and Boom pockets can be either Clear or Black

Available sail Colours to select from

When ordering your sail, select the colours you would like for Panels 1, 2 and 3. Panel 4 will always be translucent.  Request either Black,   Blue or Red trim, and the colour of the batten and boom pockets, either Clear or Black. To help you decide on your colour selection check out the other posts to see pictures of sails in colours that have previously been ordered.

SeaDog Kayak Sails are the bomb and will make your sea kayaking way more fun than just paddling. Sailing with a kayak sail in a sea or Sit on Top kayak is easy.

Surfing Dugong Jan15_1

How often have you been out on the water in your kayak and there was a bit of breeze blowing?
Have you ever wished to be able to harness the wind and get to help you along?
Now you can with a Sea Kayak Sail!

SeaDog kayak sails are extremely efficient and unlike some other sails they offer upwind* sailing in a kayak.
Yes, one can sail across the wind and go out and back without having to paddle at all, if so wishing.

Sailing with SeaDog sail_cr_c

The kayak sails are mounted far away enough that the kayaker can still paddle freely unrestricted for when the winds are too light to sail alone. A SeaDog kayak sail with a bit of breeze and the paddling suddenly becomes so much easier. When the wind picks up one can just sail and if the wind is too strong for a novice, the sail can be lowered in a split second.

SeaDog sails at Rainbow Beach May 2019

Most kayaks need very little modifications to install a SeaDog sail.
One has to be prepared to drill a couple of holes into the deck which will NOT compromise the integrity or waterpoofness of a kayak.
SeaDog sails are based on a design developed decades ago and refined over time.
The materials used in SeaDog sails are premium not currently found in other sails on the market.
The workmanship is superb and the design can be customized to personal requirements.

TECHNICAL INFO:
These sails are just as suitable for both SOT Fishing Kayaks as they are for sea kayaks.
The workmanship and cut of the sails is top quality and cannot be faulted.
The sails are made up of a combination of panels using a mix of Contender Dark Grey Code Zero laminate with a black diamond reinforcing weave on a Mylar base, as well as other panels comprising Contender ZZ03 dark grey tri-laminate sailcloth reinforced with Black Aramid (similar to Kevlar) diamond patterns. This is the type of sailcloth used in racing dinghys. It is a very stable cloth and resists  stretching in the leech which is the most common cause of leech flutter.
Top panels are coloured so that the sails are highly visible on the water.
This mix of panels allows the sail to have an optimum aerodynamic shape, giving it the right characteristics for excellent upwind performance as well as off the wind.
The stays are attached to the mast below the sail, making this type of sail particularly suited to kayaks, as should the paddler be hit by a strong gust of wind, the sheet rope can be released and the sail will fly forward of the mast, instantly depowering the sail.

Sails come complete with mast, boom, batten and Spectra side stays. Flexible mast deck fitting included which slides into the base of the mast for easy fitting or removal from the deck.
Cords for uphaul and sheet rope also supplied.

SeaDog sail_4

Mast length is 146cm for 0.8 size sail, 140cm for the 0.7 size.
